PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Floyd County man has been indicted on a felony charge after allegedly making threats during a court proceeding.
Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that a grand jury indicted 44-year-old Jonathan Howell of Auxier on one count of retaliating against a participant in the legal process, along with being a persistent felony offender.
Investigators say the charge stems from a September 10 incident, when Howell allegedly made threats toward a judge during a video court hearing. Authorities say the threats were made in response to the judge’s role in presiding over Howell’s case.
Howell was previously arrested in August after allegedly making violent threats against a U.S. Postal Service employee and Floyd County sheriff’s deputies. Police say he first threatened a postal worker, then made additional threats on social media toward deputies. He was charged at the time with terroristic threatening, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and menacing.
Officials say Howell also has prior convictions in cases involving theft, burglary and drug possession.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. It will be prosecuted by the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.
An indictment is an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
