Pikeville man charged after crash on U.S. 23 in Floyd County

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) — A Pike County man is facing charges after a crash on U.S. 23 in Floyd County.

Prestonsburg Police say officers were called to a single-vehicle collision around 8:37 p.m. on March 19 near 1887 U.S. 23 North, in the area of the Holiday Inn Hill.

According to a citation, the driver was identified as 68-year-old Joe Stanford, of Pikeville.

Police say witnesses at the scene reported Stanford indicated he was going to jail after the crash. One witness also provided cell phone video to officers.

An officer reviewed the video and reported it showed the vehicle swerving into the median, crossing into oncoming lanes, and eventually leaving the roadway before hitting a rock wall. Police said the vehicle traveled that way for about 13 seconds before impact.

Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol when speaking with Stanford. Due to the crash and need for medical treatment, field sobriety tests were not conducted.

Police say Stanford was taken to Highlands ARH, where he consented to a blood test. Results are pending.

Stanford is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, and failure to maintain required insurance.
