HAZARD, Ky. (WMDJ) — Two people are dead following a crash involving a Kentucky State Police trooper in Perry County.
The crash happened Sunday shortly after 11 a.m. at the intersection of KY-80 and Perry Circle Road in Hazard.
According to Kentucky State Police, a trooper from Post 13 was responding to an emergency call in Knott County and was traveling east on KY-80. Investigators say another vehicle traveling west attempted to turn left onto Perry Circle Road and pulled into the path of the trooper’s vehicle, causing a collision.
The driver, identified as 69-year-old Edward Dewayne Reynolds of Mallie, and passenger Christa Slone, 50, of Leburn, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Perry County Coroner’s Office.
The trooper was taken to Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was later flown to UK Medical Center.
Kentucky State Police say the Critical Incident Response Team is handling the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Several agencies assisted at the scene, including Hazard Police, the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Perry County Ambulance, and the Hazard Fire Department.
