Construction on KY Route 979 set for September, Detour planned near John M. Stumbo Elementary

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WMDJ) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Highway District 12, has announced that construction along KY Route 979, also known as Mud Creek Road, is scheduled to begin in September.

The project will cover the stretch between John M. Stumbo Elementary School and Branhams Creek. With school back in session during the construction period, a temporary detour near the school will be built to help reduce traffic congestion.

Crews will begin by widening the section between the school and nearby gas station. After that, work will shift to a new roadway segment that will bypass a dangerous curve near the Pilgrims Home Old Regular Baptist Church by Branhams Creek and connect to the new KY Route 680 connector.

Officials say the project is designed to improve safety and ease travel.
