Motive for Floyd County woman accused of murdering father released

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) – A woman accused of murdering her father has been released to home incarceration following a hearing Monday in Floyd District Court.

Summer Adkins, 22, of Prestonsburg, was released on a $5 million unsecured bond after Judge Tyler Green ruled there was probable cause to send the case to a grand jury.

Prestonsburg City Police shared details of Adkins’ arrest, saying she admitted to shooting her father, Jimmy Harvey, last week because he sexually abused her as a child and had been abusing her young niece.

A detective also said that Adkins called 911 herself, had no criminal history and was cooperative with authorities at the scene of the murder.

One of Adkins’ sisters testified that Summer reported incidents of sexual abuse as a child by her father, but nothing was done. The sister also noted Harvey’s previous conviction in the murder of a previous wife and jail time he served.
