PIKE COUNTY, Ky. (WMDJ) – A giant in coaching and mentor to countless youth in eastern Kentucky has passed away.
Legendary Belfry High School football coach Philip Haywood has passed away following injuries sustained in an auto accident on Saturday, January 18th.
Haywood’s vehicle hit a patch of black ice, running off the roadway and striking a tree in Pike County early Saturday morning.
Haywood was Kentucky's all-time winningest high school football coach with a record of 491-162 in 50 seasons. Haywood’s Belfry teams captured eight state championships and six runner-up finishes.
Haywood began his head coaching career at Prestonsburg High School in 1975, where he won 72 games over nine seasons.
Funeral arrangements will be announced.
