Attorney for man accused of murdering Amber Spradlin ask for bond reduction

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WMDJ) – The attorney for the man accused of murdering Amber Spradlin is seeking to have his client’s bond reduced.

Attorney Steve Romines filed a motion Tuesday in Floyd Circuit Court to have the $5 million cash bond for M.K. McKinney reduced, citing examples of other defendants receiving lower bonds for similar charges and claiming McKinney is not a flight risk.

Dr. Michael McKinney and Joshua Mullins, who are each facing eight counts of tampering with physical evidence, are currently out of jail on home incarceration.

Romines argues that there is no physical evidence or witness statements tying M.K. McKinney to the murder and claims the entire case is based on circumstantial evidence.

Romines futher claims that Spradlin’s friend Roy Kidd, who accompanied her to Dr. Michael McKinney’s home the night of the murder, should also be considered a murder suspect.

According to the motion, Kentucky State Police testified under oath to the Grand Jury that Spradlin was upset and disturbed at Kidd’s, ‘drunken belligerent behavior’ and felt he ‘embarrassed’ her in front of her employer. KSP further testified that Spradlin was so angry at Kidd that she had to be separated from him, which prompted the initial 911 call asking for law enforcement’s help in controlling Kidd.

A pre-trial conference for the defendants is scheduled for Oct. 24th.
